Dreamy things for my mantel and a giveaway coming…

I got the urge to tinker with my mantel yesterday.
It seems the b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l., lavender things
that I ordered from Maria at Dreamy Whites,
(originally intended for my bathroom)
wanted to receive a bit more attention
in the living room.
antique lavender bottle
dried lavender bunch

Now, those of you who follow me on facebook
know that a couple of weeks ago,
my husband decided that the TV
should go above the mantel.
So much for my display of antique mirrors.
Decorating around a big, black, rectangle
is a challenge
but with some careful thought, you can pull it off.
before we go any further,
my mantel is is unfinished
but I wanted to share my thought process
for those of you struggling with a TV on your mantel.
This is how it will look when all is said and done, according to Photoshop.
I’m still looking for a shorter, chippy, antique, white mantel
positioned around the firebox to create a double mantel.
I will build my own if necessary,
but I don’t mind waiting a few more months for authentic.
Here is where I’m at right now…
The black Pottery Barn screen is temporary
but will keep the twins out of the firebox for now.
I found it in my basement with the tag still on it.
I paid $169 for the darn thing and never used it.
What was I thinking?!
Let’s just say that 3 years ago, I was working.
Also, the Playstation 3 is taking a hike
or will end up in the front yard soon.
(Our TV in the family room stopped working last week.)
 Blah blah blah.
to solve the decorating challenge
of the big, black, rectangle,
I decided to create two separate vignettes
on either side while creating a unified look
using reflective surfaces.
Sterling silver.
I also wanted to create a sense of symmetry
and balance on each side.
You can’t see it in the photos,
but to the right of the glass jar on the right,
it’s decorative lid completes the triangle.

I added hints of lavender on either side.
On the right,
the antique bottle & lavender bunch…
Don’t you just adore the sheet music
tied around that bundle?
On the left,
a glass urn filled with lavender buds…
The jar & urn are from Pottery Barn
and are quite special to me
because they were centerpieces
at my winter wedding, along with the
snowballs that you see.
(There were bunches of rosemary and other rustic-ish greenery
in with the snowballs.)
And, just in case you’ll want to know…
the top frames are from Michaels,
the bottom left frame and small apothecary jar
are Pottery Barn,
the tiny mirrors are Dollar Tree,
the large mirror is Target (with it’s frame removed),
the German Glass Glitter “DREAM” banner (stolen from my bedroom)
and again, the the lavender bunch & antique jar are from Maria’s very-soon-to-be-open shop at Dreamy Whites.
(She has a beautiful new look to her blog, too
not that it wasn’t dreamy enough already.)

Maria is currently hosting a wonderful giveaway
along with Wintersteen Farms…

I am so grateful to Maria for letting me
pre-order some things from her shop.
Some for me…
and some for you!
To find out what’s in there,
you’ll need to come back tomorrow night.
I have quite the giveaway in store for you sweetie pies, filled with some of my favorite things from my favorite blogs.

Tomorrow, my blog will be 6 months old!
Coincidentally, it will also be my 100th post
and I’ve reached 500 followers.
That calls for something special,
don’t you think?
Anyhow, what do you think
of the beginnings of my mantel?
More lavender and snow to come but I wanted to get this fairly done in time to link upto Layla’s Holiday Home Party at The Lettered Cottage.

  6. michelle says:

Love what you are thinking! What a great idea to add another mantel below, I really hope you find one that works! Have fun!

  7. Hi Jami,
The mantle looks pretty already. Life is a compromise sometimes isn’t it? You have made some great choices. I have had to make do with faux mantles before and where there is a will there is always a way to make things look pretty. I realized I have been blogging now for 7 months! Its been great, hasn’t it?

  8. Your mantel is lovely, black box and all. I do love the symmetery and unique display of items. Hey, at least it is a thin and stylish black box, not chunky like our cumbersome TV’s.

  9. julie says:

You mantel looks great, and yep, I love that sheet music wrap. Very unique!

Hope you had a nice holiday weekend and congrats on hitting the six month mark!

  10. It’s great what you’ve achieved with your vignettes, and taking the focus off the black screen. Looks great!

  11. Hi Jami! I love lavender!! It’s one of my favorite things. I wish I had a fireplace, especially in this cold rainy weather we’re having here in Chattanooga. Thanks so much for the highlight!

  12. Kristin says:

beautiful!! can’t wait to see what is in the package!! :0)

  13. I love how your mantle looks untraditional, but very wintery at the same time. It’s beautiful…especially that DREAM banner! Ha! :)

The jean pocket advent banner is amazing. I love it!

  14. Looking great so far, Jami! My hubby wanted our TV hanging from one of those in-the-corner-hanging-dohickies. Thank goodness I overruled THAT! lol! I love the idea of framing your TV. I’m in awe of the way you draw that scale around your items to decide where to place your mantel decor. What a clever idea – and what an grand fireplace!

Congrats on your two accomplishments, girlie! yay!!!

    xoxo laurie

  15. Pamela says:

    Your mantel looks great Jami!
I’ll be back tomorrow for your great giveaway and another laugh!!
    Pamela :)

  16. Allison says:

It looks very pretty, Jami! I love the bunch of lavender wrapped in the sheet music and your fun dream banner up on your mantle. That’s a nice touch to have your photos, too. Lucky you for being able to pre-order from Maria. She has lovely things! A winter wedding…I bet that was gorgeous!

  17. Mystica says:

I think the overall effect is very charming.

  18. Jenni says:

    Hi Jami~

I love the decorations and accents on your mantel. Decorating around a television is not easy, but between your plans and what you have done so far, you have found a way to make the mantel very beautiful! :) Congratulations also on passing the 500 followers mark! And I can’t wait to see what is wrapped up! :)

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  19. I really like the idea of vignettes on each side. I don’t have a t.v. on my mantel, but I tend to decorate symmetrically everywhere :-) Your denim advent calender looks so nice there too.

I think the fireplace screen is great too…we ended up using duct tape (on the glass) at one point to keep our twins out :-)

  20. Becky says:

It is totally crazy how fast 6 months has flown by! Congratulations on all of your success! Can’t wait to see what the next 6 months brings from your creative imagination!

  21. Miranda says:

Jami, it looks great, TV and all. Your photography is beautiful!

  22. Michelle @Shellsshabbyshack says:

Oh, the black box dilemma. I like the choices you have made using reflective items and balance. Great idea to use a large chunky frame to outline the t.v. Gives it a mirror quality.

Look forward to what you do.

    Have a great night!

  23. Oooh, your giveaway parcel lloks beautifully and temptingly wrapped!

I love all the things you’ve put round your tv…and what beautiful photos too.

  24. Oh my! It’s like Christmas Eve and I just can’t wait to see what that package holds inside it! Congrats on all of those milestones and I’m so glad to be along for the ride : )

  25. BTW…Your mantle is “dreamy” indeed!

  26. You did a fabulous job decorating around the big black box, Jami! It ended up looking beautiful in the end!
You made some lovely vignettes with all the lavender goodies you bought from Maria… can’t wait to see what’s in the package!
    Jo :)

  27. Andrea - Faded Plains says:

I love what your doing with the mantel. The sliver frames and glass look great together…and pops of lavender…well that just makes it perfect. Ohhh…and I can’t wait for your giveaway…I’ll be back later tonight.

If you could see me right now…I’m like the Target lady with her hands on the window (although mine are on the computer screen) just waiting for Target to open (although I’m just waitin’ to see what’ya got behind that tissue paper)

    See ya later ;o)

  28. Rebecca says:
